This medal was presented to Sunderland defender Charlie Gladwin in memory of his achievements that season. Sunderland won the League Division 1 and were FA Cup Final runners up to Aston Villa. The medal was presented by Athletic News for Distinction in Football
Lovely 18ct Gold medal from one of Sunderlands great defenders

 

Charlie Gladwin played football for Sunderland. His debut was at Roker Park on 12th October, 1912. He made 61 appearances with Sunderland the last was on 29th February, 1915. He was in the team which in 1913 won the league championship for the fifth time, and in the FA Cup final against Aston Villa they only lost by one goal to Aston Villa. He was presented with a gold medal by "Athletic News" 1912-13 for Distinction in Football. After the first world war he went to Watford and then became coach. It is reported that he had an unsuccessful cartilage operation that resulted in his leg being amputated. After this, he went back down the pit as a train driver
